Ohio University Log Home Restoration
The oldest building on Ohio University's main campus was in need of some major love! The Bingham house was built in 1803 and is an adored historic landmark on campus. We were honored that they chose us, Scenic Pine Finishing, to restore the cabin.
We had to start off by blasting the log walls to remove all the build-up and dark coloring that is caused by old age. The chinking needed to be replaced, so we ripped it out and re-chinked. Once the logs were restored to their former glory, we applied a wood preservative and a coat of Prelude before applying a clear top coat. The University opted not to stain the cabin, and preferred to only apply a top coat so you can see the log's true color. Although, a clear coat does not protect the log walls as well as stain, those 1800s logs sure are beautiful left au naturale!
Along with the cabin restoration, we also had to repair one of the logs that was deteriorating. And to keep everything looking fresh, we also painted the windows, trim and siding in the gables. An exterior door was replaced, but unfortunately we didn't get a good photo of it.
Enjoy some of these before and after photos!
